French

The Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) National Curriculum is planned for coverage in full within the KS2 school curriculum. At Meltham Moor, we learn French. Our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop children skills in languages, through regular taught lessons. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics. We follow the Primary Languages Network Scheme of work across years 3 to 6 to ensure coverage and progression across KS2.

  • Intention 1: To build a MFL curriculum that incorporates the understanding of French so that children know more, remember more and understand more. As a result children will develop the knowledge to be able to communicate in another language other than English.

Intention 2: To build a MFL curriculum, which develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which enables children to explore the cultural capital of another country through its language and traditions and to prepare children to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community.

  • Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. As confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences. Language is revisited during the day through, instructions being given in French or answering the register.

French lessons are taught each week to progressively build on knowledge and language skills. Lessons are as practical and verbal as possible to expose children to the language. We plan to inspire and enhance with opportunities to learn about French festivals, taste French foods (Year 3-French cheese tasting) and create fact files about the country of France (Year Three Geography link.)

  • The impact of our MFL curriculum is that children are encouraged to understand the relevance of what they are learning in French and how it relates to everyday life and travel. Also how it could help them in another country or to talk to a French speaker. Teachers foster an enjoyment of languages through a variety of lessons including interactive activities that enable writing, listening, reading and singing in French.

Progression through a topic should be evident in the development of key skills and acquisition of main vocabulary. Evidence is kept of children’s work in books, through iPad video recordings (using green screen app and Chatterpics to engage the children further) and photos on Twitter. Children are encouraged to self evaluate, so they can see their progress and feel positive about languages.
